En
la década de los 60 Ferruccio Lamborghini era uno de los industriales
más prósperos de Italia. Tras la II Guerra Mundial,
en la que participó coincidiendo con su servicio militar y
donde fue encargado de mantenimiento del parque de automóviles
de su unidad, este joven emprendedor se dedicó a comprar restos
de vehículos del Ejército para transformarlos en tractores,
un negocio con el que obtuvo gran éxito.
Ganó dinero y esto le permitió adquirir varios Ferrari,
que no le dieron buen resultado, los problemas mecánicos estaban
a la orden del día. Harto de esta situación llamó
al mismísimo Enzo Ferrari, a quien se quejó de «la
basura que eran sus coches». Esto no sentó nada bien
al comendatore que contestó: «Un fabricante de tractores
no puede entender de coches». La réplica fue construir
un vehículo capaz de plantar cara al mito de Ferrari.
Posiblemente la pelea entre Enzo Ferrari y Ferruccio Lamborghini sólo
fue la excusa para que este último pusiera en marcha la planta
de automóviles, pues con su trayectoria empresarial parecía
un paso bastante lógico. Ferruccio cursó estudios técnicos
en Bolonia y su inquietud por la mecánica le venía desde
niño. Por eso, no es casual la misión que desempeñó
en el ejército ni tampoco que un hombre con sus inquietudes
viera con claridad la necesidad de modernizar el trabajo del campo
en aquella Italia de la posguerra. Su etapa militar y una infancia
en el seno de una familia de agricultores sirvieron para que diera
el primer salto en el mundo empresarial.
Es en esas fechas de principios de los 60 cuando tiene el enfrentamiento
con Ferrari, así que entre unas cosas y otras cambia sus planes
de construir helicópteros y se lanza a la aventura automovilística.
En 1963 pone en marcha una fábrica en la pequeña localidad
de Santa Ágata, a 25 kilómetros de Bolonia, el lugar
donde se encuentra el más importante centro de producción
de Ferrari, de donde salió el primer Lamborghini, el 350 GTV,
una pieza única, que dio paso al 350 GT, del que ya se produjeron
120 unidades.

Pero pronto
llegaron las dificultades. A la crisis energética,
a las fuertes exigencias en materia de seguridad para la homologación
en el mercado americano y a la agitación sindical,
se unió la anulación de un importante pedido
de 5.000 tractores por parte del Gobierno boliviano que, al
estar ya construidos, provocaron un grave problema de liquidez
en la compañía. Ferruccio Lamborghini decidió,
en 1972, vender el 51% de las acciones a George-Henri Rossetti
y, dos años más tarde, se deshizo del 49% restante,
que fueron a parar a las manos de un amigo del anterior, René
Leimer.
Pero justo antes de todo ésto, se produjo el que para
muchos es el coche más espectacular de su historia,
el Countach (1971). Era el modelo más rápido
de la época, con unas líneas agresivas y una
sensación de estar sentado en mas en un avión
que en un coche. Fueron muchos los años en que el modelo
estuvo vigente y ahora es una codiciada pieza de colección. |

La
empresa Lamborghini ha pasado un último cuarto de siglo convulso;
los primeros propietarios, tras la desaparición del fundador,
eran inversores que nunca siguieron el día a día de
la sociedad y ésta cayó en un letargo permanente, con
retrasos cada vez mayores en el pago a los proveedores. Después,
el fabricante italiano ha pasado por infinidad de manos, incluidas
las del gigante norteamericano Chrysler, en la época de Lee
Iacocca, o las del hijo del presidente de Indonesia Suharto. Por fin,
ahora, Lamborghini empieza a ver la luz al final del túnel.
En 1998, el Grupo Volkswagen se hace cargo de la compañía
y la sitúa bajo la órbita de Audi, junto con Seat. Las
tres forman la rama más deportiva del consorcio.
El primer fruto de la nueva era es el Murciélago, un vehículo
que vio la luz a primeros del 2002 y que, siguiendo la política
de nomenclaturas, toma el nombre de un famoso ejemplar de la ganadería
Miura, indultado en 1879. Con 424 unidades vendidas en el ejercicio
2002, la empresa abandona los números rojos de su balance,
tras décadas de incertidumbre.

el año 2003 se inicia la comercialización del Gallardo
(palabra que también proviene de una ganadería del siglo
XVIII absorbida por Miura), un modelo de dimensiones más reducidas
y que coexistirá con el Murciélago, un hecho que no
se producía desde hace 10 años.
